Albano Martins: The Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd (MYC) is wholly responsible for the fate of the 600 plus greyhounds at the Canidrome.
Albano Martins spoke to the newspaper Ponto Final, the day after the shocking statement by Angela Leong, executive director of the Canidrome Co. Ltd (Yat Yuen), in which she declared that the organisation would ‘adequately take care’ of the around 600 greyhounds at the Canidrome.
This is another sinister move to hide the ruthless truth, i.e. a total lack of interest for the wellbeing of the greyhounds kept at the track, which is the worst in the world, as well as a callous attempt to continue to make money off the lives of the greyhounds’ right up to the end.Albano Martins explained how the Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd (MYC), the organisation that runs the Canidrome of which Angela Leong is CEO, is the direct owner of at least 348 greyhounds and also controls the remaining 252 plus greyhounds.
It is therefore wholly responsible for the fate of the 600 plus greyhounds still alive and detained within the Canidrome.
Albano Martins explained how the owners of the other 252 greyhounds are not really free to make decisions about their greyhounds. Even if they wanted to, they would never be allowed to take their dogs out of the Canidrome, because that is part of their agreement with its management. “We have already had owners who wanted to give us their dogs, but the Canidrome wouldn’t let them and so in the end they left the dogs to the Canidrome,” said Albano.
The Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd (MYC) “…imports all the dogs and then sells them at auction to the gamblers. They start with a basic offer of 17 or 15 thousand patacas, and the sums paid for the dogs can even reach 80,000 patacas at a public auction. They are sold to the gamblers, but they remain at the Canidrome,” continues Albano Martins. “The gambler/owner pays for the food and all the other maintenance costs of the dogs, on the condition that when he no longer wants the dog because no longer profitable (due to being too slow or injured), he must give the dog to the Canidrome for free.”
Albano also reminded the newspaper that the Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd had never answered his proposal to take over the care of the greyhounds and find homes for them.
He said he was deeply concerned about the fate of these 600 plus greyhounds and with good reason, as they are now seriously at risk of being sold on to countries where they will be exploited in illegal races:
“They are already saying that they will send them to Australia or New Zealand, but it’s a lie. They might send one or two, as they already have plenty of greyhounds out there. The rest will be sold to countries like Vietnam, Pakistan and China where there are no animal welfare laws, where they will be exploited for illegal betting and will end up being killed or served up as food,” said Albano Martins.
