SAVE THE GREYHOUNDS AND GALGOS OF PORTUGAL
Please join us and sign our petition calling on the Portuguese President, Parliament and the Prime Minister to ban greyhound and galgo racing in Portugal.
In Portugal, despite Article 13 of the Treaty of Lisbon stating that non-human animals are sentient beings, the dog racing industry has been allowed to become established. There is clear evidence that racing is now a systematic activity with economic interests at its core.
Greyhounds and galgos are now being treated as ‘objects’ for betting, used and abused and then discarded. They are routinely imported, bought and sold for thousands of euros each. In fact, there are more than twenty Portuguese racing kennels already in existence. At these facilities, these gentle dogs are bred and trained in inhumane ways, denied medical care when injured and often destroyed when no longer useful.
With the spread of greyhound and galgo racing in Portugal there has been an increase in all the problems commonly associated with dog racing in the countries where this practice is tolerated:a greater number of abandoned dogs, the use of coercive and cruel training methods, and the spread of doping substances.
Dog racing also has high social costs in terms of moral corruption and the waste of public money, for the abandonment of dogs in devastating physical and psychological conditions is a problem which affects the whole community, as is the spread of illegal betting circuits.
Clearly, general animal protection laws are insufficient to prevent the myriad problems associated with dog racing. The commerce in innocent dogs must stop and specific legislation is needed.
We therefore ask the Portuguese President, Parliament and the Prime Minister to make the only wise and forward looking choice and ban greyhound and galgo racing now. By doing so, Portugal will join the ranks of other countries who have taken a similarly progressive step.
Please sign this petition: the greyhounds and galgos of Portugal are counting on us!
Thank you.
