NEW PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST THE EXPORT OF IRISH GREYHOUNDS TO CHINA -28th May and 2nd June.
The Canidrome in Macao is the most lethal track in the world. No dog gets out of there alive.
Every year around 400 greyhounds are put to sleep in Macao. Each dog races 4 times a week, and if he doesn’t finish in the top three in five races in a row, he is destroyed. There is no hope for the dogs who enter the Canidrome in Macao: only three dogs have come out of there alive and have been adopted since 2012.
In the last few weeks nine Irish greyhounds have been sent to this track.
An attempt to send 24 more there was blocked over the last few days thanks to the efforts of British antiracing campaign group Caged Northwest, and the mobilisation which followed.
We believe that this is not by chance: the Irish racing industry, which is run by the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) needs to find a market for the huge excess of greyhounds being bred.
In fact in Ireland at least 10,000 greyhounds are destroyed each year because they are too slow or simply unsuited to racing, and at the moment the industry is building up its investments in an attempt to counter the crisis it is currently going through.
We believe that it is the responsibility of the IGB and the Irish government to stop the export of greys to Macao, where there are no welfare regulations and these dogs face a certain death.
We believe that these exports are immoral and completely unacceptable on the part of a civilised country which is part of the European Union.
We therefore ask the IGB and the Irish government – who are well able to do so – to ban this type of trade and punish anyone who persists in pursuing it regardless.
We ask transport companies to follow the example of Qantas and Cathay Pacific, who stopped sending Australian greyhounds to Macao with their carriers. We expect no less from European airline companies such as Lufthansa.
We would like to remind our fellow Italian citizens not to bet online on Irish greyhounds (commercial racing is illegal in Italy) and we ask them also not to visit dog racing tracks and not to bet if they go to Ireland, for to do this would be to help those who exploit dogs.
Caged Northwest and Greyt Exploitations have organised an international protest day on Thursday 26th May, for which we are the representatives for Italy.
On the 2nd June a protest against the export of Irish greyhounds to Macao will take place in Dublin, oraganised by ARAN.
In support of this event we will be organising:
1) AN AWARENESS DAY focussing on the real situation of Irish greyhounds on Saturday 28th May from 10.00-13.00 at Via Dante 105, Cesate, MILAN.
On this day 20 Irish greyhounds and lurchers from Limerick Animal Welfare, Erin Hounds and Galway SPCA will be handed over to their adoptive families.
Emma O’Brien of Galway SPCA will be present at the event.
2) Event of 2nd June, organised in various Italian cities (Turin, Genoa, Como, Treviso, Ferrara, Pisa, Naples).
