Ian Swales demands action on Greyhound mistreatment
Liberal Democrat MP Ian Swales this week organised a meeting between the Animal Welfare Minister, Lord De Mauley, and campaigning Redcar resident, Trudy Baker, to discuss the greyhound welfare regulations review due in 2015. The Minister, not previously aware of the situation, has promised to investigate claims of greyhound abuse within the industry.
Commenting after the meeting, Redcar Constituency MP Mr Swales said:
“It was wonderful to be able to meet with the minister and give Trudy and her campaign group, Greyt Exploitation, the opportunity to raise awareness of greyhound mistreatment. I believe it is a brilliant campaign, and they can count on my support in Parliament.
It was upsetting to discover that racing greyhounds can be subjected to truly horrifying conditions, which include the administering of Class A drugs such as ‘Crystal meth’ and cocaine. It is really important that this review gets looked at closely, and I am very pleased to hear that the Minister, Lord De Mauley, intends to pay it some well deserved attention.”
Redcar resident Trudy Baker from Greyt Exploitations said:
“Greyt Exploitations is a voluntary group that campaigns nationally for the protection of racing greyhounds. Our research has shown that racing greyhounds receive minimal protection under the self regulated industry and existing animal welfare laws. Ian initially tabled a question in Parliament which prompted the Minister to offer a meeting. After hearing our evidence Minister Lord De Mauley agreed to conduct a review of the 2010 Greyhound Welfare Regulations and to invite Greytexploitations – a group totally independent of the racing industry – to take part in that review.
We couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome and we are eternally grateful to Ian for helping us to raise this important and long overdue issue in Parliament”
