“FREEDOM FOR GREYHOUNDS – CLOSE THE CANIDROME AND ALL RACE TRACKS WORLDWIDE” – Milan, 24 and 25 September
Widespread efforts are still continuing to ensure that what is now expected as the imminent closure of the infamous Canidrome of Macau does indeed take place, and to stop the exportation there of Irish greyhounds.
The Macau Canidrome is a place of death from which no dog gets out alive and where there is no adoption programme: around 400 greyhounds are killed there every year. These dogs used to come from Australia, but this is no longer possible thanks to the key airlines’ refusal to continue transporting them there, in the wake of the public outcry about the live baiting scandals in Australia, as well as revelations about the fate of the dogs sent to Macau.
So the Canidrome turned to the Irish racing industry: nine poor greyhounds were sent to Macau, and a couple of months ago a transport of 24 dogs from Ireland destined for Macau was intercepted in the UK by activists of the British group Caged Northwest, and consequently turned back by the airport authorities at Heathrow due to the poor condition of the crates used for transportation.
International pressure led by GREY2KUSA Worldwide and ANIMA Macau to obtain the closure of the Canidrome is very strong, and the result of this is now imminent.
Furthermore, the events of the last two months have made clear that the exploitatipn of greyhounds is a global problem which therefore requires a global solution: the closure of all racetracks wordwide.
We at Pet Levrieri have already participated in as well as organised protests, and promoted various events in this campaign, but we believe that our efforts should continue.
For this reason we are organising a day event dedicated to raising awareness and campaigning: for the definitive closure of the Macau Canidrome, for an end to the exportation of greyhounds from Ireland to all countries without welfare or adoption programmes such as Pakistan, Vietnam, Spain, etc – to name but a few.
Key figures from the international antiracing movement will be joining us for this event, such as Albano Martins of ANIMA Macau (SAR of the Republic of China), Christine Dorchak of GREY2K USA Worldwide, Marion Fitzgibbon of LAW (Eire), Trudy Baker and Aileen Ward of Greyt Exploitations (UK), and Michael James of Caged Northwest (UK).
We will be discussing problems related to the situation of greyhounds and galgos, and of the collaborative work required at international level to put an end to greyhound racing in all the countries where it is still legal, and to oppose the exploitation and abuse of galgos in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
In the course of the event 20 newly arrived greyhounds and lurchers rescued by Limerick Animal Welfare, Galway SPCA and Erin Hounds will be handed over to their adoptive families.
Over the next few days we will be publishing the complete programme for the day with a list of the speakers.
You are all invited to join us for the event!
We hope to see you on Saturday 24th September at the Sports Centre of Cesate, near Milan, starting from 9.00 am.
