Exploited in racing and then for reproduction
Defending champion Shanless Becky has been withdrawn from the Corn Cuchulainn after posting the fastest time in the first round at Harold’s Cross last Friday.
Owner Brendan Cullen yesterday confirmed the bitch is out through injury and will not race again. She will be bred when she comes into season, likely to be September.
Cullen said: “She is a mad chaser and I was waiting at the pick-up to stop her crashing into it, but she swerved me and hit an exposed piece of the hare rail.
“You know what it is like when skin and bone hit metal – there can be only one outcome. She won’t be able to run on Friday and that will be that with her. They need to cover up that bit of rail or other dogs will also be injured.”
Shanless Becky had only a handful of races last year, during which she won the Gain Corn Cuchulainn and failed by only a length to catch Airlie Dazzler in the Night of Stars 750.
Shanless was due to run from trap two in the second semi-final and her absence will certainly simplify things for the remaining runners, which are (in trap order) Woe Katie, Go Marcus Go, Nom De Plume, Rockburst Vienna and Slip The Genie. Trap five is vacant.
Robert Gleeson yesterday reported that Droopys Nidge is in great form following his brilliant run in the heats of the ECC Timber Champion 550 at Shelbourne on Saturday night.
“He was tired yesterday alright, but he is in great form today,” reported Gleeson.
“I didn’t expect him to do such a fast time on Saturday and in normal circumstances you would expect him to improve from the run.”
One of the more successful sponsorships over the years has been the annual summer free racing at Youghal and the local Track Supporters Club will again be sponsoring the admission fee at all meetings between Friday and August 22.
The recently improved facilities should ensure a great turn-out during the traditional holiday period.
We hear from the Buggy kennels that their star Kilgraney Tomson is on the injured list.
The brilliant winner of the €20,000 Tote Gold Cup at Shelbourne damaged a wrist when running at Shelbourne on Saturday and Larry Buggy reports that he will be on the sidelines for quite a while.
