(Full and integral post) The Dogs Trust has stated that “unless the industry takes urgent action to reform, a ban may be the only option.” This is very positive news. Here is their official reply on the topic of welfare to a concerned antiracing advocate: Reply received from The Dogs Trust Jan 10th 2018 “Dear ******* Dogs Trust is proactive on this issue in Westminster and is a member of the Greyhound Forum, a group of animal welfare charities and organisations in conjunction with greyhound industry officials coming together to improve the lives of greyhounds. The Welfare of Racing Greyhound Regulations 2010 were brought in after huge pressure from charities, MPs, media and the public to ensure that the industry ‘cleaned up its act’ and that the welfare of the dogs involved was better protected. However, at the time Dogs Trust and others warned that the Regulations did not go far enough to address welfare concerns, particularly as the Regulations focused on self-regulation of the industry on only one aspect – the track. More than five years on, we are now absolutely adamant that the Regulations and the Greyhound Board of Great Britain are failing to deliver the improvements that we need to happen if all Greyhounds are to be protected. Dogs Trust welcomed the recommendations in the report of the EFRA Committee’s inquiry into Greyhound racing which was published in February 2016. EFRA echoed Dogs Trust’s own concerns surrounding the self-regulation of the industry, and put forward the recommendation that the Regulations are amended to require the publication of essential welfare data relating to injury, euthanasia and rehoming. Therefore, we were extremely disappointed by the Government’s weak stance on legislating for much needed improvements to Greyhound welfare, following the publication in September 2016 of their Post Implementation Review of the 2010 Greyhounds Regulations. Having long campaigned for a review of current Regulations, we are dismayed that only minimal changes may be considered by Defra to improve the 2010 Regulations – with these having been delayed until this year at the earliest. The approach being taken by Defra is to rely on a non-regulatory agreement with the Greyhound Board of Great Britain to publish statistics from 2018. Dogs Trust believes that unless the industry takes urgent action to reform, a ban may be the only option.
