Talking about Angela Leong and our petition in order to #Save The Macau Greyhounds!
Some people may be wondering who Angela Leong is and why she is so hell bent on making things hard for Anima, so here is a clarification: Angela Leong is the executive director of the Canidrome and unfortunately unless the Macau government forces them to hand the dogs over to Anima (which is what we have been campaigning for and what our petition is all about), from a legal viewpoint the dogs have racing owners and so in theory they can do what they like with them.
In the past they would have just killed them, but they can’t now because last year a new law came into force in Macau which forbids the killing of dogs for commercial reasons.
The Canidrome has been given until July 21st 2018 to either move out or close down.
The land is already earmarked for building houses. As land is at a premium in Macau and there is nowhere else for them to move to they will have to close down, but they are refusing to hand the dogs over to Anima partly out of spite because it was basically Albano Martins and Anima who got them shut down, and partly because they want to continue profiting from the dogs by selling them on to countries like China who have illegal racing circles, or to other countries in Asia where there is a nascient racing industry like Vietnam, but no animal welfare protection, and where the dogs would face more suffering and a terrible death, with the added risk of ending up in the dog meat markets of China.
Added to which, the greyhounds at the Canidrome have not been sterilised, and so breeders in China would be prepared to pay a lot for them.
These potential profits that they still wish to make out of the greyhounds are the real reason why the Canidrome – and Angela Leong as their CEO – want to create a fake ‘greyhound protection organisation’ (a bad joke if ever there was one, as the Canidrome has killed thousands upon thousands of dogs in the 54 years of its existence and in all that time only very few have come out of there alive) under cover of which they would secretly dispose of the dogs in ways that would ensure they would still make a profit out of them.
Our only hope is that continued international public pressure on the Macau government convinces those in power to do the right thing and force the Canidrome to hand the dogs over into the care of Anima.
Anima director Albano Martins is also working continuously and persistently behind the scenes doing everything he can to raise public awareness about the plight of the Macau greyhounds and trying to save them.
We must not give up on them!
