School children encouraged to get involved in greyhound racingPupils at a primary school in County Offaly are being encouraged to get involved in greyhound racing and told that the owner of a winning greyhound is "a wonderful role model".Rhode National School, Scoil Mhuire Naofa, recently hosted a celebration event for former teacher Paddy Guilfoyle after his greyhound won the derby race in Shelbourne Park last month.Speaking at the event, Irish Greyhound Board CEO Ger Dollard said: "It's great to see the school honouring a past teacher and, I suppose, encouraging children to become interested in greyhound racing.""Paddy Guilfoyle has won the holy grail of the greyhound world in Ireland – the Irish Greyhound Derby and the school wants to acknowledge that," he added. "They see it as important that they would acknowledge that and that all the pupils play their part in celebrating that success. It encourages the pupils in the school to become involved in greyhound racing."The school children were given "Irish Greyhound Derby Winner 2017" caps to wear and encouraged to paint "Congratulations" pictures for hanging in the school.School principal Mary Bray described the visit as a "wonderful occasion for our school". "We're delighted to share in the celebrations with Paddy [Guilfoyle]," she said. "Paddy is a wonderful role model to the pupils in our school"She went on to say that the parish priest and chairperson of the school board "has a huge interest in greyhounds".ICABS has brought this to the attention of the Minister for Education and asked him to advise schools to stop encouraging involvement in a gambling industry in which dogs are injured, mutilated, dumped, drugged and killed.ACTION ALERTEncourage Rhode National School to invite a greyhound rescue group in to give a talk about the animal cruelty in Ireland's greyhound industry.Mary BrayPrincipalScoil Mhuire NaofaRhode, Co.
