FIVE OF THE NINE EXPORTED IRISH GREYHOUNDS PRESUMED DEAD AT THE MACAU CANIDROME
It grieves us deeply to confirm that four of the eight Irish greyhounds deemed to be still alive and active at the Macau Canidrome have disappeared from the database on the Canidrome’s official website. It is therefore highly likely that they are dead, but we do not have irrefutable proof.
They are Two Stone Tadgh, Crossfield Leona, Ballinulty Show and Milled Ash.
In addition to these four victims there is another, High Maintenance, who disappeared from the Canidrome’s database between June and July 2017, which leads us to the conclusion that he must be dead also.
If their death is confirmed, it is likely to have been caused by an accident on the track, or worn out by the terrible life they had to endure at the Canidrome, or they may have died due to illness.
But until we have confirmation, we can only speculate on the actual cause of death.
Since the 1st September 2016, according to the groundbreaking new law on animal welfare ‘Lei de protecção dos animais’ which was passed in July 2016 by the legislative assembly of Macau and is the first ever of its kind in the history of the Portuguese colony, the euthanasia of animals for financial reasons is now illegal.
But even that possibility – that they may have been illegally euthanised – cannot be entirely excluded.
An investigation is currently underway to determine what has happened to the dogs.
In whichever way they may have died, what is certain is that the Canidrome is hell on earth, a kind of death’s antechamber for the approximately 650 greyhounds still there. Each one of these 650 greyhounds risks his or her life there every single day.
Crossfield Leona and Two Stone Tadgh arrived in Hong Kong together with Crossfield Simon on the 16th March 2016 on their way to Macau.
The other six arrived in containers on the 15th April 2016. Their trasport was intercepted by GREY2K USA Worldwide in collaboration with ANIMA – 澳門愛護動物協會, who documented it with photos and videos.
On the 17th December 2016 they were sold at auction to race at the Macau Canidrome.
Their disappearance is a huge blow to all those working so hard to save these dogs even at great risk to themselves, particularly Anima Macau and its founder and president Albano Martins.
We in the international community of greyhound advocates, rescuers and campaigners will continue doing all we can to offer support and help to Anima Macau and Albano Martins in their efforts to save the 600 plus remaining dogs still alive at the Canidrome.
The international campaign #SavetheMacauGreyhounds was set up specifically to save all the greyhounds still alive in the Macau Canidrome, and find them at last an adoptive family who will love and respect them.
We ask you all to support this campaign. It’s more important than ever to be able to count on the help of the whole world.
May Two Stone Tadgh, Crossfield Leona, Ballinulty Show, Milled Ash and High Maintenance all rest in peace.
