Caramelo…I’d like this story to be known
Caramelo was only a few months old, old enough for his little puppy body to be torn apart at the hands of a galguero. He died in his sleep, in refuge worker Cobie’s bed. I think he was happy for a few moments. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.
I’d like this story to be known by those who want a young dog, because they don’t want to have to suffer by losing him too soon.
I’d like us to remember that the time our dogs have with us is special and memorable whether it’s long or short, when compared to the lives of their unadopted Spanish and Irish brothers.
It makes all the difference to remember what we are comparing their lives to, and to fully acknowledge the meaning of the word ‘rescue’.
So I look at the photo of this puppy, and then at my aging dogs full of ailments, and I think that they – my own dogs – cannot be the sole focus of my commitment.
Rest in peace, Caramelo. At least you were given a name. It’s not enough for us, but we hope it was enough for you.
